I had the opportunity to attend the Urban Signals‘ launch party held downtown (thank you for the invite Jordana!!). The launch party was a fabulush hi-tech soiree filled with beautiful people and a flirtatious ambiance.

But…what was even more fabulush, was the Urban Signals Application itself.

What is Urban Signals?

Urban Signals is a social networking, location-based mobile application that allows you to see people around you, if they’re available, interested and ready to meet up – right there on the spot.

How does it work?

Urban Signals’ innovative platform leverages the benefits of online dating, while integrating social, dating and gaming elements that encourage spontaneous connection between singles. Urban Signals broadcasts a user’s location with the application’s unique radar. The radar shows users the location, mood and status of other singles of interest that are nearby. Similar to online dating, these singles are determined by the user’s preferences.

A woman interested in men between the ages of 25-40 will only be notified when other users of interest to her, are in her area. She can then learn more about them by viewing profiles that offer just enough details to inform, intrigue and encourage further action. “Signals” are then exchanged between users to say hello, express interest, or meet up if they share a mutual interest or attraction.

Dating 2.0: Google’s Amorous Super Bowl Ad

Who hasn’t Googled something about dating / relationships / love / romance???

This commercial is actually from Nov ’09 but Google execs decided to drop a load a cash – 2.5 million – to have it viewed during the Super Bowl (uber-smart decision, I must say)!

This commercial had me feeling mushy all over

Dating is complicated enough.

And, I have nothing against people who possess a quiet confidence & feel that they are beautiful. Nothing wrong with a healthy self-esteem…

But online dating sites should not make it even more complicated for us in the World-O-Singledom to meet other potential partners just bc we ate a little extra pumpkin pie over the Holiday season.

A couple of 20-Somethings were cruising through the West Village in Dallas and were disgusted when they heard about actions of a dating website called BeautifulPeople.com. The site just kicked out about 5,000 members for gaining weight over the holiday season.

“You know, I just don’t think that’s fair,” said Hillary Kinzler. “Everybody gains weight after the holidays.”

But, the founders of this hotties only website think it is fair. “Letting fatties roam the site is a direct threat to our business model and the very concept for which BeautifulPeople.com was founded,” said Robert Hintze, founder of BeautifulPeople.com

The members were kicked out when they posted updated photos on the site for the new year showing that they packed on a few pounds. BeautifulPeople.com is also predominately member driven. If you want to get into the dating site you have to submit a picture and put in your profile. Then members get about two days or so to decide if you’re beautiful enough to join them.

Uhm, CEO’s using the term ‘Fatties’? Really? Your thoughts, dahlings…
