Q&A with EK designers Fatima Monkush & Nyla Hashmi:

1. What was the inspiration behind this collection?

The inspiration behind our Spring ’10 collection was an amalgamation of thoughts! We spent a lot of time pouring over images from ancient Greece and Rome, as well the present dress in the sub-continent. We both have a mixed heritage (being half white and half South Asian) that is so deeply rooted in the arts, that we felt Spring was the right season to explore it.
You can see the feel of ancient Greece and Rome in our drapey silhouettes and then the South Asian inspiration peeks through with the prints and details. The Zoe pant, for example, is clearly inspired by the pleats of a sari, while the front drape of the Genevieve blouse is inspired by the garments once worn in Athens.

2. What would you consider an investment piece from this collection?

A staple investment for your wardrobe would be our Noelle blouse. The simplicity in its shape allows you to pair it with anything, from a skirt, to a suit. While its details, like the front tucking and top stitching, allow you to stand out in the crowd.

We also have a novelty investment in the Zoe pant, paired with some of the more structured tops in the collection and the volume is well balanced and flattering.

3. Can you share any styling/accessorizing tips when wearing pieces from the EK line?

Eva Khurshid is all about you defining yourself and rediscovering sexy, and with the right accessories you can make the look your own. The details are all subtle enough that you have a lot of room express yourself.

We used a lot of florals throughout our campaign, from over-sized flower bracelets (total DIY) to floral prints. We also brought on the statement jewelry with a lot of chunky chains and necklaces. And you can top off the look with a pair of great heels!

Nyla Hashmi and Fatima Monkush are the fabulous designers behind designer label Eva Khurshid New York. What is so intriguing & exciting about this brand is their design motto: “Sexy Rediscovered”: tailored, timeless pieces made with beautiful fabrics & designed for the contemporary woman with modesty on the mind.
Both women grew up in conservative households, each with an American mother & Muslim father and due to religious boundaries, had limitations in their wardrobe options. And as such, their goal was to design a conservative yet modern, fashion-forward clothing line.

Eva Khurshid New York is geared towards the career-savvy, cosmopolitan chick who desires sophisticated, classic and beautiful pieces that are destined to be wardrobe staples. Shop the designer line here: www.evakhurshid.com.
