Designer Deets: Chulette

11 Jan, 2010  |  Designers
While shopping at Showroom New York‘s recent Designer Sample Sale, I had the pleasure of meeting Lee Phutrakul, designer behind NYC label Chulette. Lee was kind enough to show me pieces from Chulette’s S/S 2010 Collection and I have to say – the collection is simply divine.

Many of the pieces are made of 100% silk and range in light shades of taupe, stone, blue & yellow – the perfect color palette for the S/S season. A few of my favorite pieces:

The Open Sea Dress with its conservative front, surprises you with a partial open back outlined in contrasting colored pleats. It reveals just the perfect amount of skin.

The Wave Dress, again exemplifies Lee’s intrinsic eye for detail with its beautiful pleated neckline, this time done in a lighter, complimentary shade of the dress.

The Draped Skirt instantly gives you the visual of a tulip, a perennial Spring flower, in the most refreshing shade of light blue.

The Seahorse Dress is a versatile shift dress with a deep v-neckline and made of 100% Swiss Pima Cotton. This is an ideal “throw on & go” dress for the S/S Season.

The Cape Blouse, another piece made of luxurious silk and shown in a lush shade of purple, has a beautiful drape over the shoulders done in sumptuous sheer silk.

The Waterfall Dress has a relaxed fit and is a perfect layering piece under a cardigan or blazer.

The Tuck Waist Skirt with its pin-tucked detailing at the waist, gives it that perfect touch of delicate femininity.

The Double-Collar Draped Blouse has a relaxed fit with free-flowing split sleeves. The collar lends a nautical feel to the blouse.

The Cloudy Dress, an effortless silhouette, has contrasting tonal stripes along the v-neck line, short & flirty dolman sleeves and an elasticized waist.

About the designer:

Lee Phutrakul never set out to become a fashion designer; however her dedication to fashion and natural eye for design seamlessly led her to a career as a designer. After studying advertising in Bangkok Thailand and eventually landing the assistant fashion editor role at Esquire magazine, Phutrakul decided to pursue a career in fashion design. It was during this time that she was recognized as a finalist for Fashion Group International’s prestigious women’s ready-to-wear design competition. In 2007, Chulette was created to redefine casual sophistication for the woman who appreciates simplicity but with an eye to detail.

Teeny House Bunny’s Swan Lake feather headband (adorned with lace, locket & cameo) as seen on Emma Watson in the August 2009 issue of Teen Vogue:

Last week, on my visit to Eva Kurshid’s sample sale (pics coming soon) @ Showroom New York, I was introduced to fabulush New York Accessories Designer: Teeny House Bunny!

THB’s ornate headpieces & jewelry captured my attention immediately. Their feathered headpieces, each finished with leather backing and hair comb on back, come in a variety of vibrant jewel shades such as emerald, magenta & sapphire. THB combines both modern & vintage pieces in order to create their unique & special accessories line.

Even more distinguishing, are some of their feathered head pieces & headbands that feature miniature ornaments attached, such as: miniature ceramic cats, vintage miniature perfume bottles, vintage keys and cameos.

Their designs are absolutely beautiful.

Nyla Hashmi and Fatima Monkush are the fabulous designers behind designer label Eva Khurshid New York. What is so intriguing & exciting about this brand is their design motto: “Sexy Rediscovered”: tailored, timeless pieces made with beautiful fabrics & designed for the contemporary woman with modesty on the mind.
Both women grew up in conservative households, each with an American mother & Muslim father and due to religious boundaries, had limitations in their wardrobe options. And as such, their goal was to design a conservative yet modern, fashion-forward clothing line.

Eva Khurshid New York is geared towards the career-savvy, cosmopolitan chick who desires sophisticated, classic and beautiful pieces that are destined to be wardrobe staples. Shop the designer line here: www.evakhurshid.com.

I am an ardent supporter of New York’s Garment Center, which is the foundation of the NYC fashion industry and “the soul of Midtown Manhattan”.
And of course, being Midtown Girl, I completely support the Garment Industry‘s cause in preserving it’s place in Midtown and supporting designers that manufacture their apparel in New York.

So, when I read about Showroom New York, I was uber-excited to learn more about the designers they feature – emerging designers who produce in New York.

Launched by the Garment Industry Development Corporation (GIDC), Showroom New York provides to a select group of emerging & local fashion designers: professional counseling, a professional space to present their collections (to wholesale buyers, stylists & press) and assistance in finding production resources in New York City.

MG hearts Showroom New York and looks forward to introducing my fabulush readers to their featured designers!!!
Supportive kisses,

p.s. A special shout out goes to my wonderful friend & fellow 39th St. neighbor, 39thandBroadway. Her blog gives excellent insight into the inner workings of New York’s garment center and of the NYC fashion industry. Love her! XOXO
