Ask MG: What Clothes Should I Buy For College & How Do I Discover My Style?

Oct 1st 2012 1 Comment

Hi Midtown Girl,

I stumbled upon your site weeks ago and now am a regular visitor! I am about to go off to college and I want to buy an entirely new wardrobe with my job money. My problem is, I’m a bit overwhelmed with all the choices and am not sure what to buy! What basics should I start with, and how do I discover my true style?

Congrats on your future collegiate experience! Shopping for a new wardrobe for college can be a bit stressful but there are few ways you can make the process efficient & fun…

1. Start by building a foundation of classics and then add pieces that you love. You don’t have to spend a fortune (or all of your job money) but it’s important to buy pieces that will last through 4 years of classes, events & future job interviews. A navy blazer, white button down, pencil skirt and a kitten heel (yes kitten, no need to tear up your toes while running around campus) are excellent pieces to layer up or down. Adding accessories &  jewelry that you adore will help you discover your own personal style.

  • Navy Blazer – $44.50,
  • White Button Down Shirt – $40,
  • Pencil Skirt – $49,
  • Tyler Kitten Heel – $89 by Ellen Tracy,
2. Pick casual basics that are comfy but also classy. Your roomies may roll out of bed & run to an early class in their sweats & slippers, but this doesn’t mean you have to follow. Leggings, tunics & a pretty pair of embellished flats will have you looking polished at all hours of the day. I love wearing a casual tee under a navy blazer paired with leggings or skinny jeans.  AG Clothing offers nicely-fitting jeans and leggings with various styles to choose from.
Estelle Tunic – $26.99 by Lole,
Seamless Leggings – $14.99,
Diamante Ballet Flats – $60 by Oasis,
3. During the evenings, there are must attend events & mixers, which means you should always be prepared with some ‘throw on & go’ pieces. Print blouses (polka-dot, striped or ascot), skinny jeans & tan boots are super easy to wear and because they are wardrobe staples, you will always look polished & fabulush!
Boxy Polka Dot Top – $19.80
Personal Life Spray On Skinny Jean – $74 by BlankNYC,
Stallion Riding Boot – $149.95 by Matisse,
Have fun shopping!!!
