One eve, after finally getting back into my apt from a long day of trekking around the city, I decided to unwind by doing a bit of channel surfing.

I was so glad I did because I got a chance to catch Ovation TV’sAnatomy of a Closet segment. So I thought, why not share this countdown of iconic fashions with my dahlings…

Why is fashion important?
“Fashion is so important because no matter what, your clothes define you and it’s what determines how you will be seen by the world.”
June Sarpong

10 – Red Lipstick

  • June Sarpong (Television personality): “Red lipstick looks good on everyone.”
  • Kate Lanphear (ELLE’s Style Director): “Unleashing a little bit of a harlot when you wear a red lip…”

Fashion Fact: by 1924 50 million American women were using lipstick.

Still need to find my perfect shade of red…

9 – Mini Skirt

  • Mary Quant (British Fashion Designer): “…made everyone feel happy.”
  • Susie Crippen (Co-founder & Creative Director of J Brand Jeans): “There is an age limit & a height limit. Height should be tasteful.”
  • Kate Lanphear: “Mini’s revolutionized expression through clothes.” Love her & saw her IRL last NYFW!
Fashion Fact: When it first came out Disneyland banned mini wearing @ the park. By the late 60′s everyone was wearing it.

I just bought a new mini – will do a video post on this soon!

8 – Fedora

Andrew Bolton (curator at The Costume Institute @ Metropolitan Museum of Art in NY): “Name fedora came from a play…only until 1900′s was it adopted by man, became of symbol of the middle class working man.”

Fashion Fact: The circumference of a fedora should be 1/2 inch bigger than your head.

7 – Bra

  • Susie Crippen: “Crucial and could completely change your shape…finding the right bra is probably the most important thing you will ever do in your life”
  • Valerie Steele (director of the Museum at FIT):not just about supporting, but also about stylizing the breasts, making them look a particular way…”

Fashion Fact: The Wonderbra features 54 separate design elements.

p.s. I prefer to wear my bra on the inside, not outside, of my outfits. Ya get me?

6 – Trench coat

  • Christian Siriano: “change buttons for each season, adding your own belt, wear the collar up or down…”
  • Kate Lanphear: “Audrey Hepburn in Breakfast at Tiffany’s…the scene with the kiss in the pouring rain…”

Fashion Fact: Bogart Casablanca Trench coat sold for $10,575,000.

I love my Burb trench! I am also replacing the buttons on my Zara black shiny trench, to change up the look (I have to anyway, Midtown Pups chewed one of the buttons off – thanks dog!) ;-)

5- Stiletto

Kate Lanphear: “Stiletto means sex. Sex on heels. The forefathers tried to mimic shape of a woman’s foot during climax.”

Fashion Fact: The Italian stiletto knife is where the stiletto heel gets its name.

“Sex on heels?”… La-huvs it!

4 – White T-shirt

  • Valerie Steele: “white t-shirt was 1930′s gay erotica symbol symbol of hunky, sexy male.”
  • Andrew Bolton: “G.I.’s in war made the white t-shirt more masculine…as did Marlon Brando..”
  • Mary Quant: “T-shirts are very good for wearing under sensational jackets and just make the whole thing work.”

Fashion Fact: T-shirts are typically made of cotton or polyester knitted together in a jersey stitch.

2- Little Black Dress

  • Kate Lanphear: “The little black dress is genius, so versatile.”
  • Susie Crippen: “For me that is heaven.”

1 – Jeans

  • Susie Crippen: “In a effort to find that perfect jean for myself, we really looked for a stretch denim that had the same sensibilities as a rigid denim…You get your own fingerprint on your jean by the way you wear them, wash them…”
  • Larry Mullen, Jr. (U2 Drummer): “Jeans have transcended every particular fashion every year..they have an enduring quality.”
  • Kate Lanphear: “Our country was built on denim…”

Fashion Fact: Levi Straus patented the first mass produced jean in 1873.

  1. Thankfully, I have managed to teach my pup to understand what's his stuff and what is mine. He can now be left roaming the house on his own with designer shoes and lots of other goodies lying around!

Anyhow, this is such a great list. I can't live without skinny jeans, scarves, nude lipgloss and diamond studs. And I have recently eyed those new Lanvin T-shirts, but $523 might be a little pricey for something I will most likely get tired of quickly. :)

  2. I think that the only fashionable thing that I would have a hard time getting along without is you! :) )

Otherwise, I am a fashion disaster!

  3. LifestyleBohemia

  5. Delightful in every way this post! I believe the shoes were designed to mimic the shape of a woman's foot during climax, that is true!
    Thank You.
